Yesterday was the 37th annual Atlantic Antic. Once a year, for just one day only, a mile of downtown Brooklyn’s Atlantic avenue is turned into a huge street fair. Its a full fledged event that brings out a pretty large crowd of artists, families, and foodies alike. It’s been a few years since I’ve gone, so I decided to check it out with my mom and step-dad to see what kinds of food were being sold, outside of the obvious carnival fare. To my surprise, I saw noticed more ethnic vendors, including a few Middle Eastern and Indian food stands. That made me happy.
So let’s face it, nobody ever goes to a street fair looking for a healthy food choice. In fact, the one thing that I always look for is the mighty, greasy, heart-attack inducing FUNNEL CAKE. Despite being a health fanatic, my mouth waters even as I say the word, and childhood memories flood my taste buds. Even though my stomach kind of rumbles thinking of the aftermath, there is no stopping me from getting my funnel cake fix. The only thing that has changed in the last twenty years of chasing them down, is the fact that I can now eat them without covering myself in powdered sugar.
Low and behold, as I spotted my funnel cake stand yesterday, I also discovered this:
What the %&^?? I sort of remembered my coworker raving about these at some point during the last couple of years, however, seeing them live in their golden crusted flesh kind of freaked me out. It just seemed like a pretty bad idea. And guess what! I turned a bad idea into a good one. I just had to try it. As soon as I prepared to gladly meet my possible doom, my parents observed with a look of disapproval on their faces. It was as if I was about to snort some sort of sugary version of cocaine for the first time.
The verdict: AMAZING! I was kind of pissed off that I loved this grease ball as much as I did. I was hoping that I’d hate it, hoping to desperately prove all the unhealthy eaters wrong that this kind of food couldn’t possibly taste that good. FAIL on my attempt. The deep fried oreo is a damn good winner in my book, in serious moderation, of course!
